grid-enabled probabilistic step sequencer

WARNING: monome modules require high +5v rail current

please make certain to check your cases +5v power supply capacity. if it is underpowered (<600mA), or highly taxed, our ext5v adaptor is required. available very affordably directly or from our retailers.

updates for version 1.2 shown in italics

Normal playback is from left to right. With each clock pulse the current “step” is output: four trigger outputs and two CV outputs. A sequence is created by changing the triggers and CV values per step.

Toggle the trigger outputs per step by pushing the bottom four rows. These four rows correspond vertically to the panel. A panel LED next to each trigger indicates output.

The top row of the grid shows the edit mode. Trigger mode (the default) is accessed by pressing anywhere in the leftmost group of four keys. To change to CV A, push in the next group of four. CV B is the third group of four. (See diagram on reverse side).

In CV mode, holding a position in the bottom row will assign the PARAM knob to this step.

position and clock

Playback position is indicated in the second row. Pressing a key in this row will cut to that position on the next clock pulse.

Loop length is 16 steps by default. Change this by holding a start position while pressing an end position.

Internal clock speed is controlled by the CLOCK knob. If a cable is plugged into the CLOCK IN jack the internal clock will be disabled. The CLOCK IN accepts trigger pulses. The CLOCK OUT jack sends the clock in use which is additionally indicated by an LED near the jack.

step mutes / choice

Row four displays a per-step mute. There is an independent mute for triggers, CV A, and CV B. When toggled off, data will not be sent at this position.

Row three indicates the current pattern. Sixteen patterns are available, which store trigger, CV, mute, and loop data.

To change patterns press a position in row three. To copy current data to another pattern slot, press and hold that position.

Entire collections of patterns can be saved to internal flash. On power-up the most recently saved set will be recalled and will play instantly.

To access the memory system, push the key next to the USB port on the panel. The display on the grid will change.

Eight storage locations are accessed by pressing the leftmost column. Hold a position to save to this location. Press a currently selected location to load. Escape the memory screen by pressing the panel key again.

To quick-save to the current memory slot, push and hold the panel key.

“alt” is the top-right key on the grid

“meta” is to the left of the “alt” key

live input

  • hold alt and push the trigger-mode keys to toggle-on the state of the respectively pressed key in the currently playing step. deprecated in 1.2
  • hold alt and push the any key per trigger row to toggle-on at the currently played back step

in cv mode (curves)

  • hold alt and the bottom-right key to live record the parameter knob movements

series sequence

  • to enable series mode, hold alt and push the sequence key, just next to alt (hold alt, then press meta)
  • to escape series mode, push the top row trigger or cv mode keys
  • playback progresses vertically down, patterns represented horizontally
  • a box is drawn around the start/end of the sequence
  • to scroll, hold down the sequence key (meta key) while turning the param knob
  • hold alt and push rightmost column to set sequence end
  • hold alt and push next-to-rightmost column to set sequence start
  • holt alt and push leftmost column jump to this sequence position
  • it is possible to set multiple patterns per row by holding down several keys
  • a position with multiple patterns will have one of the choices randomly selected each time

queued pattern change

  • hold alt when selecting pattern to change when loop-end is hit. (this only makes sense when step mode is forward or reverse.)

step modes

  • holding alt, keys from rightmost edge: forward, reverse, drunk, random
  • holding alt, keys from leftmost edge: skip back, skip ahead, jump random

note: skip ahead and back are relative to the “next” position of playback, so a skip ahead while in forward mode feels like a pause/repeat.

step mute/choice

  • in trigger or cv mode, hold alt and push row 3 to access step choices
  • now press rows 4-7 to adjust choice probability: 75, 50, 25, and 0 percent chance

trigger choice

  • hold alt and touch a trigger step (rows 4-7) to toggle trigger choice deprecated in 1.2
  • hold meta and touch a trigger step (rows 4-7) to toggle trigger choice
  • when toggled the steps will be shown dim, and only one of the selected triggers per step will be triggered

gate mode

1.2 only:

* hold at and press the top row trigger section to toggle gate mode on/off. there is no visual indication.

when in trigger mode, trigger length is a half clock cycle. in gate mode the output follows each step, allowing for long unbroken pulses.

1.2 only:

  • hold meta and toggle top row triggers to mute/unmute
  • hold meta and toggle top row cv channels to mute/unmute

cv curve vs map mode

  • hold alt while selecting cv channel 1 or 2 to toggle between curve (default) and map modes

cv curve edit keys

  • per-step tuning: row 4 = up, row 6 = down (semitone)
  • hold row 5 (center) while pressing up/down for fine tuning
  • hold alt while pressing up/down for octave tuning
  • last touched center key is remembered, and can be copied to another step by holding alt while pushing center
  • alt plus bottom row (row 7) will assign a random value

cv map mode

  • map mode uses a set (“scale”) of 16 selected values
  • row 4 is the currently selected step
  • each step can be set to a scale value using row 7
  • multiple values can be assigned per step, one will be chosen at random on each play
  • the value is displayed (coarse and fine) on rows 5 and 6
  • the value is not displayed if multiple values are selected
  • a scale value can be changed by holding alt and the bottom-right key to assign the param knob to the currently selected value
  • the leftmost keys on row 5 and 6 are used to adjust up/down, starting from the left: octave, 5th, semitone, fine

cv map scales

  • preset map scales can be recalled by holding alt and pressing the bottom-left key
  • the bottom half of the grid will now correspond to preset positions
  • select one to recall the scale
  • scale applies to cv a and b
  • push bottom-left to cancel
