board creates two grid systems (button and led) in an x-y pattern. button system uses surface mount diodes to prevent ghosting. this method lets us discretely detect press and release of all keys simultaneously. diodes are placed by hand after solder-pasting (more information on this in the next section), then baked in the toaster oven.
the leds are through-hole. jason made us an incredibly helpful mounting board which lets us solder up without worrying about alignment (they come out perfect every time.)
